“The Inns of Wiltshire in old photographs“ Swift, A. & Elliott, K. (2010)
Steeple Ashton Village Green 1887
In Steeple Ashton sadly we don’t get travelling fairs on the village green today, but this one was setting up 126 years ago. No railings around the green then. Coachmans Cottage is a few yards away in the lane on the right.
This picture comes from a book Swift, A. & Elliott, K. (2010), “The Inns of Wiltshire in old photographs“. Bath: Akeman Press, pp. 54-55. www.akemanpress.com copies available. Also a copy is on view at the Trowbridge Museum http://trowbridgemuseum.co.uk/
The second house from the left, once the “Rose and Crown“ Steeple Ashton, was de-licensed around 50 years ago. The house on the far right was originally a chapel.
A copy of Steeple Ashton lockup at Lacock as seen in The Cranford Chronicles
