Country Life Best Britain Church St Marys Steeple Ashton June 2014 issue
“For centuries the village church has been at the heart of the community and England’s 14,500 listed places of worship continue to be kept alive by the devotion of their congregations”.
So says Country Life magazine and St Marys, Steeple Ashton, Wiltshire is listed in the position of number 5.
So many of our guests comment that our quintessential English village is lucky not to be well documented and on the holiday makers itinerary!
Today not many villages still have a vibrant community village shop, a traditional village pub and an outstanding church, all in close proximity.
The latter was highlighted in the Country Life, June 2014, “Best of British” the 12 best Village Churches. With St Marys, Steeple Ashton, Wiltshire listed in position 5.
St Marys Preservation Trust has been hard at work over the past few years raising funds to maintain the fabric of the church, the summer of 2013 saw major refurbishment to the front porch….now weathering in nicely.
More about the Country Life Best/Britain Church St Marys Steeple Ashton
Imagine this impressive church with a steeple…. to be seen from miles around…. lost centuries ago when struck by lightning, not once but twice. Sadly two men working on the restoration of the steeple were killed and so it was decided that Steeple Ashton would just have to be a village with no steeple on the church. At the start of 2000 AD lasers were set up to replicate the steeple, unfortunately the weather did not co-operate so this was not a great success although clever photography allows postcards to see this (on sale in the church).
The perfect base for visiting this wonderful area Coachmans Holiday Cottage you will not be disappointed!
